EED is delighted to be representing a Japanese family based in the Madinat Jumeirah area of Dubai, seeking a warm, energetic and playful Learning Mentor for their son, turning 9, who has attended international school for the past two years and is still building his English language skills.

The family is looking for someone who can build a genuine, trusting friendship with their son, engaging with him entirely in English through the things he actually enjoys — Roblox, Minecraft and Nintendo Switch, board games, Lego and crafts, sports and outdoor activities, cooking, shopping and outings, and open-ended conversation, storytelling and child-led projects.

He is quiet and reserved, and the family wants someone who feels genuinely like a big brother to him — someone he likes and relates to, rather than a traditional tutor figure. Building trust at his pace matters more than covering ground quickly.

The role starts at 10–12 hours per week, based at home, after school and/or at weekends, with day trips out (arcades, bowling, similar activities) as part of building rapport and encouraging him out of his shell. If the fit is strong, hours may increase over time, potentially including accompanying him at school and coordinating with his teachers, to be worked out between the successful candidate, the family and the school as needed.

This role is exclusively for the 9-year-old boy. The family also has 5-year-old twins, and the successful candidate will not be asked to work with them. No travel is required.

Key Responsibilities

• Building a genuine, trusting friendship with the 9-year-old son
• Engaging with him entirely in English through activities he already enjoys — gaming, Lego, crafts, sport and outdoor activities
• Supporting his ongoing English language development through natural, conversation-led interaction
• Organising and leading day trips locally in Dubai — arcades, bowling and similar activities that help him build confidence and come out of his shell
• Building trust and rapport at the child’s pace
• Coordinating with school teachers as the role potentially expands
• Communicating openly with the family about progress and wellbeing

Candidate Requirements

• Native English speaker essential
• Already living in Dubai with existing right to work — no visa sponsorship required
• Strong experience with this age group, ideally with a teaching qualification or background
• Genuinely kind, warm and patient — able to feel like a “big brother” figure to a reserved child
• Positive energy, comfortable building trust gradually rather than pushing pace
• Genuine, current knowledge of Dubai — able to suggest and lead engaging day trips and activities
• Shared interests with the child (gaming, creative activities, sport) a real advantage, not just a nice-to-have
• Full, clean driving licence essential
• Experience working with or alongside international schools strongly preferred
• Excellent, verifiable references
