Job Description

Live-in Housekeeper – private island, Bermuda – £28,000–£32,000 net (tax free) per year

A private client is looking for a professional, discreet and very self-sufficient Housekeeper for their newly renovated, high-specification home on a private island in Bermuda. This is a long-term live-in job for an experienced housekeeper who can keep exceptional standards, use their initiative and settle easily into a long-serving, multicultural household team. The house is extremely high end, so you need to be confident with luxury housekeeping, wardrobe care, service and occasional cooking. Senior staff will give full training on the household's standards, products and methods.

The property

  • A newly renovated, top-end home over 3 floors, plus an underground cinema room
  • 4 bedrooms (the entire top floor is a guest suite) and 2 offices
  • A large dining room, a high-end main kitchen and a secondary kitchen area
  • Gym, swimming pool, patio and outdoor seating areas, and extensive grounds with many plants
  • Electric staircase

Accommodation and team

  • A brand-new, modern private one-bedroom staff apartment with all bills paid; staff cover their own food and personal expenses
  • A loyal, long-standing and very capable household team in which every housekeeper can cook
  • High standards, strong teamwork and excellent holiday cover
  • A supportive workplace where professionalism and discretion are clearly expected

Main duties

  • Full housekeeping of a luxury residence, including care of delicate materials, fine furnishings and top-end finishes, high ceilings and many large windows
  • Daily cleaning of bedrooms, bathrooms, the kitchen, living areas and guest spaces; preparing and turning over guest rooms; keeping the whole home immaculate
  • Laundry, ironing, steaming and wardrobe organisation; caring for fine linens and delicate fabrics; basic sewing and mending
  • Serving the family's daily meals and providing formal food and drink service at dinner parties, with correct etiquette, table settings, service styles and drinks presentation
  • Occasional cooking: simple, healthy meals at weekends when needed, with an understanding of vegetarian preferences, following the principal's instructions (he enjoys cooking himself)
  • Daily grocery shopping, and monitoring, ordering and organising household supplies and storage
  • Creating and looking after fresh flower arrangements around the house
  • Daily care of the family's dogs, including feeding, walking and general wellbeing
  • Reporting any issues promptly, following the household's established products and methods (training given), keeping the home secure and well maintained while the family travels, and covering colleagues' holidays (up to one month)

Working conditions

  • 40 hours a week, 2 consecutive days off, no overtime
  • 1 month's paid holiday a year and one airfare home each year
  • No income tax
  • Comprehensive private insurance, including dental and vision
  • A private pension, with the option for staff to pay in extra
  • Uniform provided
  • All immigration and processing costs covered or reimbursed

Essential

  • At least five years' experience in UHNW or high-standard private households
  • A thorough grasp of how food and drinks should be served at formal dinners
  • Good knowledge of the right housekeeping methods and products to use
  • Confident with wardrobe management and caring for luxury linens
  • Highly independent and discreet, with an invisible-service mindset
  • Open to coaching from the senior staff on the island, and glad to live and work on a private island
  • Down to earth, low profile and a light drinker
  • Must speak English (there is an immigration test)
  • Comfortable living and working in a strictly smoke-free household
  • Reliable, calm and professional, and able to fit into a multicultural team

Desirable

  • Experience on large estates with extensive grounds
  • Some basic cooking ability, ideally including vegetarian dishes
  • Able to help with outdoor areas (not maintenance)

Start: ASAP; the immigration process takes about 3–4 months.
