Language Arts/Social Studies Tutor - part-time

Pacific Learning Academy is an established 1-on-1 school in Sammamish, WA, specializing in 1-to-1 education. We are looking for a personable, in-person English and History tutor/instructor able to meet our students in their Sammamish homes or the Academy school office. The demand is highest after school into early evening, Mon-Thurs.

Lessons are in-person, 1-on-1, and with middle and high school students in the Sammamish and Issaquah area. Some lessons may be via Zoom. If you love bringing joy to a student not used to loving academics, being an Academy instructor is the job for you! As a private school tutor and teacher, you may also be helping individual students earn high school credit (training provided and additional pay, including drive-time pay between student homes or the Academy school office)!

• Multiple subjects ability? In addition to English and History tutoring, Academy instructors will have more opportunities to expand their schedules if they have the ability and interest in tutoring additional subjects. Currently, we are finding lower-level Math and Study Skills/Executive Functioning Skills areas of need. Your application will be given priority if you have these skills.

Working Conditions:

• Schedule: Hours depend on student demand, which is highest in late afternoons and evenings during the school year. This position is part-time, with an anticipated need of 8 to 12 hours/week from Monday through Thursday. If you have weekend availability, let us know!
• Locations: Issaquah/Sammamish student homes (with an adult in the house), local libraries, or the Academy school office in Sammamish. This position requires applicants to be available for in-person lessons. Some families also request virtual Zoom lessons (but all instructors must be able to attend in-person lessons).
• Necessary travel: We drive between lessons (paid time) and you will need a reliable car for in-person lessons (optional).
• Job Duration: (Paid) training begins immediately upon hire and position commitment is until the end of the season, which is mid-June for the school year. We hope you'll stay much longer and are proud of our team and retention!

Essential Abilities and Behaviors :

• Be proficient and able to explain your subject fluently from absolute beginner to advanced. You will need experience, even informally, explaining concepts, devising activities, and helping students document their progress.
• Communicate on a consistent basis via Pacific Learning Academy email and commit to reporting lesson details via our online system within 24 hours.
• Persuade reluctant learners to find joy in the subject again and be ready to explain concepts in fresh, flexible ways!
• Education: 4-year degree as a minimum in any subject.
• Skill: Able to work with middle and high school students and provide unique and differentiated support and instruction based on their learning needs.
• Misc: Reliable transportation for in-home tutoring on the Eastside (Issaquah and Sammamish) and reliable internet/equipment if you'd also like to work with students via Zoom.
