POSITION TITLE:
AVID Tutor (Small Group Facilitator)

JOB DESCRIPTION:

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is an elective class available to APS students in identified high schools and middle schools. It is a proven program that supports all students so they reach their full potential in preparation for a rigorous high school and postsecondary education. As an AVID Tutor (small group facilitator), you will share an imperative role in bringing out the best in AVID students, in closing the opportunity gap, and in creating a successful experience for them. Trained Tutors (small group facilitators) will facilitate student inquiry through a process called AVID Tutorials, serve as role models, and guide students’ learning through the Socratic process.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Under direct supervision of the AVID Department, AVID Tutors (small group facilitators) will work in a supportive manner with middle and high school students and must be able to understand the delicate position they will occupy; they are advocates for students, yet are ultimately responsible to the teacher. Tutors (small group facilitators) are required to participate in year long training and must be available to meet regularly with their assigned teacher to discuss student progress and future Tutorial plans.

AVID Tutors will:

  • Facilitate the Tutorial process in small study groups.

  • Help students develop the skills needed to work collaboratively to solve problems.

  • Empower students to answer their own questions by posing questions which help students to think more critically about what they are learning.

  • Guide students in high-level discussions of critical topics as a means of developing vocabulary, enhancing discussion skills and fostering thought processes which will enable students to succeed in rigorous courses.

  • Reinforce writing skills through review of notes, learning logs, and essays.

  • Navigate an online or in-person interview.

  • Be available for a background check and fingerprinting session.

  • Attend mandatory Tutor meetings.

  • Complete mandatory Tutor training

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE:

Tutoring experience and/or working with youth in public schools, private schools, day camps, youth groups, licensed day care centers, teaching, instructing and/or educational classes, or other approved settings preferred to expedite the application. Additionally, applicants need to have the working knowledge of a computer and navigate online resources.

REQUIREMENTS:

A crucial feature of the AVID program is the preferred use of both traditional and nontraditional college students as tutors (small group facilitators) although selection will not be limited to these groups.
