Job Description

University Overview:
MidAmerica Nazarene University is a private, liberal arts university with a variety of undergraduate, graduate, and adult education programs, accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The tutor will work with individual students and groups of students to determine levels of understanding, answer questions, and help students to understand subject matter. Applicants must have passed the subject with a B grade or higher and must provide a faculty recommendation or transcript from the institution where they are/were enrolled.

Job Duties:

  • Complete required tutor training.
  • Provide tutoring services in a one-on-one and group setting.
  • Help students clarify course expectations and prepare for tests.
  • Share strategies for student success during tutoring sessions
  • Tidy work areas.
  • Maintain electronic records.
  • Assist with departmental duties and workshops as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse student population verbally and in writing.

Qualifications:

  • B grade or higher in subject area.
  • Recommendation from faculty or transcript
  • Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of the interests of historically underrepresented groups.
  • Specify what subject(s) you are interested in tutoring for.

Training:The ASC's Tutor Development Program is certified through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) and provides CRLA-approved training for tutors to earn their Level 1 International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC). Tutors receive 11 hours of training to learn and sharpen their skills and knowledge in the following areas:

Tutors, then, must fulfill 25 tutoring experience hours to earn their Level 1 CRLA-ITTPC certification.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Work is performed in a normal office setting, in an open reception area. Travel between buildings on campus is possible; occasional weekend and evening work during can be expected. Deadlines, disturbances of workflow, and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis.
