Fantastic live in role for a professional customer service orientated candidate   

Our client has a beautiful newly renovated manor house in the south of the Lake District which is used for exclusive rentals and a limited number of weddings per year and is looking for a professional and conscientious house manager to oversee the smooth running of the property and care for its guests.

You will be required to work a flexible 5-day week depending on the needs of the bookings and will be entitled to 5 weeks holiday per year.

Duties will include but not be limited to:

Facilities Management

  • Regularly inspect the structure, fabric and systems of the building, identify faults, deficiencies or dilapidations and take immediate action to remedy them. If the manager judges a repair/remedy to be outside his personal competence (i.e. requiring contractor expertise) and for all jobs over £500.00 he is to obtain three estimates and submit them with a recommendation to the Facilities Manager for financial approval.
  • Monitor performance and quality of work of contractors making reports as appropriate.
  • Recruit staff as required and agreed with the Chairman. Train, manage and motivate them.
  • Devise and implement Health and Safety procedures. Take every precaution to ensure the Health and Safety of self, colleagues, residents, and visitors.
  • Order and correctly store foodstuffs and beverages to support activities at the Manor, keeping accurate records.

Estate Management

  • Maintain pathways and drive ensuring that they remain free of debris. Ensure frequent patrols of the grounds to collect natural detritus and litter and disposing of them.
  • In collaboration with the gardener, keep grassed areas weed-free and neatly cut.
  • Maintain garden furniture and ornaments
  • Devise and implement a pest control plan as necessary

Financial Control

  • Prepare budgets for each event and agree an Annual Business Plan with the DOL each year.
  • Submit bills/invoices/expenses in a timely manner to the Financial Director for payment.
  • Submit costed proposals for minor projects to the DOL for approval.
  • Keep a detailed record of alcoholic beverages stock and consumption.


  • Establish bona fides of unfamiliar visitors before allowing access.
  • Make frequently hi-profile and covert checks of the grounds.
  • Conduct routine tests of security system and smoke/heat detection system(s).

Guest Services

  • On occasion, drive to a railhead or airport to collect/deliver customers or staff.
  • In the role of steward, do everything possible to make the stay of guests as pleasant and enjoyable as possible in addition to the professional organisation of meetings and meals.
  • You will be responsible for catering to their every need, be it organising a shooting party, trout fishing, a day at the races or securing a table at the local 3* Michelin restaurant.

Business Meetings/Conferences/Events/Weddings

  • Scheduling of events in conjunction with the relevant customer personnel. Keeping a running monthly calendar of all events which is accessible at all times to all concerned.
  • Arrange any outside accommodation which may be required if sufficient space is not available at the Manor.
  • Ensure all catering is arranged as agreed in a timely manner and organise all outside catering for special functions.
  • Manage the bar facility ensuring the bar is open and run-in accordance with guidelines as set down by the Chairman.

You will be provided with a newly renovated one-bedroom gate house, utilities and council tax will be covered. Pets will be considered on a case by case basis.
